Calcutta Competition Sunday 29th July 2018
The Calcutta, was originated by George Ridley on his return from a trip to Canada where he saw the format. A unique feature of the Calcutta Competition is betting
The Calcutta competition is played annually for The Eaton Golf Cup. Starting at The Old Eaton Club, George Ridley (who was in the winning team in 1937) provided the Cup and provided a fund for silver tankards and photo frames for the winners to keep. The George Ridley fund has run out and engraved glassware is now presented.
The Calcutta competition will be open to sign on from 29th June and will close on 22nd July
The Competition is run by the Mixed Committee but is open to all Eaton members with a competition handicap. You do not need to find a partner as the teams of four will be drawn.
From all the entries the 25% lowest handicaps are identified and chosen as team captains.
The 25% of highest handicaps are also identified.
Each team will then comprise one low handicap person, one high handicap person plus two mid handicap players.
The Team must comprise 2 ladies and 2 men.
The competition will be on a Shotgun start and so the maximum number of teams will be 22.
On the day of the competition we will gather for bacon baps and coffee and you will be able to bet on your favourite teams between 11.30 and 1.30 with the shotgun at 2.00pm
Team members will be expected to stay for a meal after the golf and they may, of course, book meals for partners who are non-players
This will be a very enjoyable day and I would ask members, perhaps who would not normally play mixed golf, to consider entering.
